My name is Barry Hooper, and my journey into the field of bodywork seemed predestined. I have a BS in biochemistry from Fairfield Unniversuty where I majored in pre-med. Though I did not want to become a doctor, I have never lost my fascination and wonderment about the human body and it's design.
I was doing bodywork at the age of ten on a trainer's table at a neighborhood swim club. It just came to me. Not like something I chose, more like something that chose me. I fought that calling for nearly thirty years by working really hard at allot of very tough jobs. I ran restaurants, restored hotels, and started my own carpentry business doing everything from historical restoration to building houses. But, eventually, after one more 80hr week of abandonment to my beautiful wife Marianne, I jumped into the corporate world for a steady pay check and finite hours. In 6 months I was ready to hang myself. Finally, I answered the call, went back to school for an extensive education, and started Bodywork Unlimited.
I have been blessed in too many ways to enumerate since then. But I can not really tell you about me without telling you about my family. I'm part of a team now. There is no me, just us. We live on a secluded estate in an old stone carriage house that my wife and I worked endlessly to restore. We have two amazing boys, Dylan (7) and Jack (4). We both work from home so that our children almost always have one of their parents with them. We have fought through three miscarriages, great physical and financial burdens, and every hurdle that has come our way in relationship. And our core values have become stronger at every turn.
I have chosen to raise the children during the days and work evenings.
In all I have done I will never face a greater challenge. Parenting calls for absolutely all your game, if you ask me. There is no point at which any sane human being would say, "That's enough love, patience, understanding, acceptance, insight, wisdom, courage, humility, respect, forgiveness, and leadership for today. Think I'll quit on the kids right now." So whatever you bring to the table, if you're gonna be a great parent, you're gonna joyfully call upon yourself for more. And really it's just one word I'm talking about, love. To me it is taking every opportunity to cause your loved ones to flourish, at all expense no matter what. When they become their best possible self you are done. Anything else you get out of it is beside the point. It's a moving target and not generally reachable for humans, but approachable. And truthfully, you're never done.
So much has contributed to my view of life. Really the most important things I can tell you about myself are that I was called to bodywork as my vocation. I believe all good things on this planet start with a powerful love commitment. Hence, I believe that all there is to do here is love or die. And I believe the rest is a matter of vanity and the trappings that go along with it. I also believe, as humans, we are by and large bound to those vanities, trappings and judgements but at least we can call ourselves forward each day and forgive the rest.
Finally, If I could impart one thing on my clients that would empower them indefinitely, it would be the idea that it truly is their belief system that will determine their reality, rather than the other way around. In the end, it's probably a combination of the two. So I want my clients to believe in themselves and if they don't, I want them to come to choice such that they can really see that can't means won't. Because in the end, your life will be what you say it will be, so why not say good things, become who you really are, and then love someone. I believe in god. And I believe he speaks when a person accepts those responsibilities and then shines on another.
In the end, though, only my clients can really tell you about me. So please read some testimonials and contact me if you wish. Thank you for taking the time to discover me.
Truly,
Barry Hooper
